1. Prepare the Vanilla Custard
In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until warm but not boiling.
In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth and pale.
Gradually pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to avoid curdling.
Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon (about 5-7 minutes).
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Pour the custard into serving glasses or bowls and let it cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
2. Prepare the Chocolate Layer
In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it begins to steam (do not boil).
Remove from heat and add the chopped chocolate. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes to melt, then stir until smooth and glossy.
Stir in the butter for extra shine (optional).
3. Assemble the Dessert
Once the custard has chilled, pour the warm chocolate mixture over the top of each custard serving. Spread evenly with a spoon.
Allow the chocolate layer to set slightly at room temperature before serving.
Optional Garnishes
