4 large potatoes, peeled and diced

1 small head of cabbage, cored and chopped
4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
2 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
2 bay leaves
1/4 cup heavy cream (optional)
